چکیده

Current fluctuations are studied in a mesoscopic conductor using nonequilibrium Keldysh technique. We derive a general expression for the fluctuations in the presence of a time dependent voltage, valid for arbitrary relation between voltage and temperature. Two limits are then treated: a pulse of voltage and a DC voltage. A pulse of voltage causes phase sensitive current fluctuations for which we derive microscopically an expression periodic in ∫ V (t)dt with the period h/e. Applied to current fluctuations in Josephson circuits caused by phase slips, it gives an anomalous contribution to the noise with a logarithmic singularity near the critical current. In the DC case, we get quantum to classical shot noise reduction factor 1/3, in agreement with recent results of Beenakker and Büttiker. Counting Electrical Charges: a Problem of Thermal Escape and Quantum Tunneling in Presence of Non-gaussian Noise

Electrical noise produced when charges flow through a mesoscopic conductor is non-Gaussian, where higher order cumulants carry valuable information about the microscopic transport process. In these notes we briefly discuss the experimental situation and show that theoretical descriptions for the detection of electrical noise with Josephson junctions lead to generalizations of classical and quan...

The Physical Phenomena Responsible for Excess Noise in Short- Channel Mos Devices

− The physical phenomena responsible for the excess noise in shortchannel MOS devices are explained based on the non-equilibrium noise theory. Comparing the MOS excess noise with the well known excess noise in a mesoscopic conductor, it is suggested that the physical origins of both are the same. Using this theory, it is proposed that the noise sources used in the Impedance Field Method (IFM) s...

Double quantum dots as detectors of high-frequency quantum noise in mesoscopic conductors

We propose a measurement setup for detecting quantum noise over a wide frequency range using inelastic transitions in a tunable two-level system as a detector. The frequency-resolving detector consists of a double quantum dot which is capacitively coupled to the leads of a nearby mesoscopic conductor. The inelastic current through the double quantum dot is calculated in response to equilibrium ...

Frequency Dependence of Shot Noise in a Diffusive Mesoscopic Conductor

Detailed measurements of the voltage, temperature, and frequency dependence of the nonequilibrium current fluctuations for a diffusive mesoscopic conductor are reported. The data confirm predictions that a mesoscopic conductor shorter than the electron-electron inelastic length will display shot noise. Furthermore, the low temperatures (100 mK) and high frequencies (1–20 GHz) used for the measu...

How to Build a Credible Mesoscopic Theory

Electron transport in metallic systems is governed by four key principles of Fermi-liquid physics: (i) degeneracy, (ii) charge conservation, (iii) screening of the Coulomb potential, and (iv) scattering. They determine the character of metallic conduction and noise at mesoscopic scales, both near equilibrium and far from it. Their interplay is described by kinetic theory, the serious method of ...
